About Us

Creative Landscape Consultants (CLC) is an award-winning Design/Build firm serving the Sonoma County area and adjacent counties. CLC specializes in the design and installation of custom residential and estate landscapes.

CLC offers its clients a wide range of services, which includes site analysis and development, the implementation of fire-safe land management, hillside development and erosion control, and proper surface water management in addition to the creation of aesthetically pleasing outdoor living environments. Its designs strive for maximum effect with minimum care, utilizing cost effective solutions without compromising quality.

As full-service installation contractors who enjoy meeting the design and installation challenges that come with hillside terracing and decks, CLC recommends using California native and Mediterranean plants, deer and drought resistant plantings, drought and fire resistant landscapes, and water-conscious irrigation systems. After over twenty-five years of landscape design and installation experience, CLC has become skilled at creating unique solutions for challenging sites: useable patios, water features, decks, fences, and lighting.

Through the careful evaluation of site virtues and problems, CLC can assist in the integration of site and structure, creating inviting and useable outdoor living spaces. The company works with clients to explore a wide range of aesthetic, practical, and budget alternatives. CLC president, Kent Calkins, has been a landscape professional since 1970, achieving first an A.A. degree in Ornamental Horticulture from Monterey Peninsula College in California, and later earning both a B.A. and M.A. from Sonoma State University.

From 1970-73, Kent designed and supervised for White Oak Landscape Company in Carmel Valley, California. From 1973 through 1979, Kent collaborated on a variety of multi-unit and green belt projects at Oakmont, Santa Rosa, as foreman of Oakmont Builders’ Landscape Division. He has owned Creative Landscape Consultants since 1979, serving as president since 1999.

Creative Landscape Consultants is a member of California Landscape Contractors Association and is the recipient of numerous awards for water-conscious design and quality installation. It has been featured in the Northern California Xeriscape Association video and brochure, in numerous articles in the Santa Rosa Press Democrat and on local Channel 50. Photographs and articles showcasing its work have been featured in Sunset and Garden Design magazines and in the Sunset Western garden book.

The goal of Creative Landscape Consultants is to provide comprehensive landscape services to enable homeowners as well as building industry professionals to maximize the usability, appearance, and appraisable value of their project. From the beautification of public spaces to the creation of accessible outdoor living spaces with privacy and microclimate enhancement, each job is unique.
